Investing in Nursing Delivers Strong Returns for Hospitals, New Study Finds

The American Nurses Enterprise (ANE) has released groundbreaking findings from its national INVEST Study, showing that hospitals that prioritize investment in nursing achieve measurable financial benefits alongside improved patient care outcomes.

The study, led by principal investigators Olga Yakusheva, PhD, FAAN, and Marianne Weiss, DNSc, RN, highlights that nurses who make up the largest share of hospital staff—should be recognized not just as a labor cost, but as vital organizational assets.

“Sustained investment in nurses improves care delivery and supports long-term performance,” said Brad Goettl, DNP, DHA, RN, FNP-C, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer of ANE. “Organizations that invest in nurse safety, well-being, and the work environment are better positioned for operational and financial success.”

Key Highlights from the INVEST Study:
Surveyed 45 hospitals nationwide, representing 80,000+ nurses.

Examined workforce characteristics, investment expenditures, and hospital operating margins.

Collected rich qualitative insights on strategies and challenges in measuring financial outcomes.

Confirmed that nurse-focused investments drive both quality care and positive ROI.

The findings will be shared at upcoming nursing conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals later this year. An executive summary, including study aims and methodology, is available for download.
